Alicante Compass

Playa del Postiguet, Alicante.

Busy, convenient, and impossible to avoid. Alicante's most central city beach — nearly a kilometre of golden sand right below Santa Bárbara Castle, steps from the Explanada de España.

Home/Beaches/Playa del Postiguet

Playa del Postiguet is the most convenient beach in Alicante — and it's hard to argue with that. Everything is within reach: toilets, lockers, sunbeds, phone charging, and if you've forgotten something, there are shops nearby. Plenty of cafes and restaurants along the promenade mean you never have to go far for food or a coffee.

The tradeoff is the crowds. This is Alicante's most visited beach and it shows — especially in summer. My family tends to head to Albufereta for the calm water or Playa de San Juan for the space. But if you're staying in the city centre and want a quick swim without going anywhere, Postiguet does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Playa del Postiguet, Alicante — Visitor Guide

Parking, facilities, getting there, and the honest answers to the questions most visitors search before their first visit.

What facilities are available at Playa del Postiguet?
Playa del Postiguet is a Blue Flag beach and the facilities reflect that. Year-round you'll find public toilets, foot showers, and wheelchair-accessible ramps at every beach entrance. During high season (June to September) sunbed and umbrella rentals are available along the full length of the beach, along with a Red Cross lifeguard station. Beach lockers and phone charging — available directly on the sand from €1/hour, run by Alicante City & Beach. Pedal boat rentals — available in season. Children's play areas — dotted along the beach. Outdoor fitness equipment — on the promenade. Santa Bárbara Castle elevator — the entrance is directly across the road from the promenade. For the size of the beach the facilities are genuinely well-organised. Everything is within easy reach and nothing requires a 10-minute walk to find.
Is Playa del Postiguet good for families with kids?
Yes — with a few things worth knowing first. Playa del Postiguet is a Blue Flag beach with gradual water entry, calm and shallow water close to shore, and a good range of facilities for families. Children's play areas are dotted along the beach, pedal boat rentals are available, and lifeguard cover runs throughout high season. That said — it's a city centre beach and it gets busy. In July and August the sand fills up fast. If you're visiting Alicante with young children and want calmer water, Albufereta beach a few kilometres north is worth considering — naturally sheltered bay, playground on the sand, and noticeably quieter. If space is the priority, Playa de San Juan further up the coast stretches nearly 3km and absorbs crowds far better than any city beach. For a short family beach day right in the city though, Postiguet delivers everything you need without going anywhere.
What is the best time to visit Playa del Postiguet?
Before 10am — that's the honest answer for summer. Playa del Postiguet gets busy fast in July and August, and by midday the sand is packed. Early mornings are when the beach is at its best — calm water, long shadows from the castle, and you can actually find a spot without negotiating. September is underrated. The sea stays warm, the tourist crowds thin out, and the promenade restaurants stop being a queue and start being a pleasure. Locals reclaim the beach and the whole place settles into a different rhythm. Avoid: Midday in peak summer if you dislike crowds. Also worth checking conditions after rain or strong winds — the water can turn murky quickly at an urban beach this close to the port. Year-round the beach is accessible and worth a visit — even in winter you'll find locals walking the promenade and the occasional brave swimmer. The castle view doesn't change with the season.
Is Playa del Postiguet good for snorkelling?
Not really. Playa del Postiguet is a sandy urban beach with flat bottom and busy water — visibility is limited and there's not much underwater to explore. On peak summer days the water gets murky from the sheer number of people in it. If snorkelling is on the list, the better options are nearby. Cala Cantalar at Cabo de las Huertas has rocky coves, clear water, and marine reserve status — about 6km up the coast. Albufereta beach has rocky edges at either end of the bay worth exploring with a mask and fins, and it's only a few tram stops away. Postiguet is for swimming, sunbathing, and convenience. For snorkelling — go north.
How do I get to Playa del Postiguet from Alicante city centre?
Honestly — you might just walk. Playa del Postiguet is less than 10 minutes on foot from the Explanada de España and around 15 minutes from Luceros. It's the most accessible beach in Alicante by a significant margin. On foot: The easiest option for anyone staying in the city centre or old town. Follow the seafront from the Explanada and you're there. By tram: Lines 1, 3, or 4 — stop Postiguet or La Marina. One or two stops from the city centre. By bus: Lines 2, 5, 21, and 22 all serve the beach directly. By car: There's a paid car park directly behind the promenade with over 100 spaces including disabled parking. Street parking nearby fills up quickly in summer — arrive early or use the car park. The convenience is genuinely Postiguet's biggest advantage. No planning required — just go.
Is there parking at Playa del Postiguet?
Yes — but this is honestly one of the trickier aspects of visiting Postiguet beach by car. The beach sits in the heart of the city, which means parking works like city centre parking — competitive, paid, and limited. The open car park directly next to the beach fills up completely on most summer days — don't rely on it. A better option is the underground car park near the Casino — one level, more spaces, and a short walk to the sand. Street parking exists in the surrounding area but it's metered and goes quickly. A practical alternative is to park further back in the city — near Luceros or the market — and walk down to the beach in 10–15 minutes. Or skip the car entirely: Postiguet is one of the few Alicante beaches where the tram genuinely makes more sense than driving.
